HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENTS OF PROSTHETICS AND ORTHOTICS IN TURKEY
The first improvement in the area of orthotics in Turkey was made during the period of Abdulhamid II in the Ottoman Empire. In 1898 Professor Robert Rieder Pasha, who was a Surgeon in Bonn University, was brought to Istanbul for 3 years in order to make a reform on Turkish Medical Education and to check the newly founded Medical School on Haydarpaşa (Gülhane). Rieder Pasha, falls and breaks his leg and hurts his low back during the building supervision in Haydarpaşa Tıbbiye-i Askeriye (Military Medical Academy) and workshop studies begun due to the necessities for ortheses. The improvements on prosthetic field proceeds when the Finance Minister (Masarif Nazırı) of Abdulhamid II, Sadettin Pasha has three amputation surgery on his leg and needs prosthesis. Four officers were sent to Paris for one year to study in prosthetics and orthotics. The first prosthesis workshop Tersane-i Alatı Nazikiye was built by the leadership of the navy engineer, Captain Hüseyin Rıfat Bey who came back to Turkey and in 1914 this workshop was incorporated to Gülhane Hospital.
During the First World War, the loss of the limbs of the soldiers in the front lines or Trablus, Çanakkale and Arabia, played an important role on the improvement of prosthesis and orthosis. Navy Kazım Elgün was send to Vienna for four years to study with Lorenz by Kızılay and was given outstanding services with Besim Omer Akalın Pasha in the area of prosthesis with his return.
The first private organization was made by Kifidis, who studied in Paris to open a private prosthetic and orthotic workshop in Beyoğlu in 1928.
The first information about the mechanical orthopedics in our country is obtained from the first Turkish resource in prosthetics and orthotics field, published by Professor Alpsoy in 1951, Artificial Limbs and Orthopedic Appliances and the articles of Professor Ege in this field.
The first study over prostheses and orthoses in Ankara starts by the leadership of Fuat Çelik, who studied prosthetics and orthotics in Germany and came to Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Orthopedics and Pediatric Surgery Clinic in 1948. The same year, German technician Hans Press established the prosthetics and orthetics workshop in Istanbul-Medical Faculty. In 1955, technicians like Nobe and Ziebel contributed to the improvement of the workshop in this field.
Prosthetics and Orthotics and Biomechanical Workshop Unit was founded in 1965 in order to perform Prosthetics and Orthotics and their Rehabilitation applications, in Hacettepe University School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation founded in Ankara by Prof. Dr. İhsan Doğramacı in 1961. During the foundation and improvement of this workshop, Dr. Necdet Güçlü in particular, Prof. Dr. Rıdvan Özker, Prof. Dr. Hidayet Erdem, Prof. Dr. Sabri Narman and Prof. Dr. Candan Algun have had precious contributions. Prof.Dr. Gül Şener and Prof.Dr. Fatma Uygur has made important contributions since 1993 regarding the improvement of prosthetics and orthotics unit by projects.
In 1961, a group consisting of technicians and, orthopedics and traumatology specialists was send for study to Italy, Institute of Rizzoli, when the Gülhane Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic was founded. This study program continued until 1966 and after all these efforts, Gülhane Prosthetics and Orthotics workshop was put into service as a small unit and was improved by precious contributions of Prof. Dr. Sabri Ateşalp who was sent to America in 1996.
TAF Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, with 300 bed capacity, was founded in 2000, by the help of our people that contributed to the campaign started in 1995, in Ankara. A 500 meter square prosthetics and orthotics unit was also involved as well as many rehabilitation units in this Center.
In 1984, Prof. Dr. Halit Özyalçın from Ege University Orthopedics and Traumatology Department, attended prosthetics and orthotics classes Strathclyde University, and founded a workshop in Ege University Faculty of Medicine in his return.
In 1985, Vocational Technical High School on Health was founded according to the German Government technical cooperation agreement within the scope of GTZ Project, in Istanbul.
In 1993, a Prosthetics and Orthetics Laboratory was founded within the body of Ankara University in Cebeci Medical faculty Campus-Vocational Higher School of Health Services by the efforts of the Administrator Prof. Dr. Ilksen Turhanoglu, the leadership of Prof Dr. Hidayet Erdem, who contributed to the improvement of many technicians, physiotherapists and doctors in this field, and the works of Prof.Dr. Serap Alsancak. The improvement needs for this laboratory increased as Prosthetics and Orthotics Workshop belonging to Ankara University Orthopedics and Traumatology Department was closed. Prof. Dr. Serap Alsancak was sent to Strathclyde University in 1995 and the laboratory works accelerated when she returned. The Vocational Higher School was moved to Kecioren and in 2007 with the efforts of Prof. Dr. Serap Alsancak and Lecturer Haydar Altınkaynak, prosthetics and orthotics laboratory in well standard were put into service in order to fulfill the studies of prosthetics and orthotics technicers and needs of patients.
In the meantime non-governmental organization works took a start in our country. Turkish Scientific Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics was founded in December 1998 in Ankara to contribute in Technologies that will make easier in the disabled people. Prof. Dr. Hidayet Erdem, Prof. Dr. Gül Sener and Prof. Dr. Serap Alsancak president the association with their precious contributions. In addition to this association, which actually brings different disciplines together under a scientific roof, Orthotics and Prosthetics Association in 1992 and Prosthetics and Orthotics Technicers Association in 1994 were founded in a more technical manner. Other associations continue to form, helping the prosthetics and orthotics services to become more available.
